I've done 3 trackdays on the bike and absolutely love it. The handling is amazing!!! I also have a Ducati 748 track bike I'm getting ready to sell... too many toys. I'm planning on getting a MV Agusta. So if anyone wants to trade... :D

I purchased this bike from a friend of mine who low sided it with 800 miles on it. It was checked on computrack and the frame has no damage and is perfectly straight. The only damage was the instrument pod and the plastics were scratched. I sold all the stock bits on ebay and got a full set of sharkskinz for the bike. All the wiring is perfect and actually I have a light hooked up. There are signals and it's plated for the road. I have the title free and clear. Mileage is around 1200 now.

It currently has a Jardines pipe and a powercommander (shaggy's tune) on it. Otherwise it's totally stock. I aslo have Dymag wheels for it if you're interested that I will sell either with the bike or seperately. This bike has no issues.

From the AFm email list. Names removed.

A few weeks back, I sent out an email asking for help on registering (title only) my out-of-state, salvaged Ducati 748 race bike in California. I received numerous replies which helped me tremendously.

The key to this whole project is to register the bike as a Non-Operational vehicle. This is also called "Title Only". All you have to provide is a Vehicle Verification certificate endorsed by the CHP, referred by the DMV.

Note that this is not the same as Register a Salvaged Vehicle since then you would need to provide a Brake and Light Inspection Certificate (REG 256) as well as pay extensive fees. One DMV office got confused about the subtle difference between a bike with a salvaged title (by means the title shows 'Salvaged", therefore the brake and light inspection has been performed already!) and a revived bike (whose regular title does not show 'Salvaged) which needs to be inspected by CHP.

Follow the procedure below and you will receive your CA title in about 2-3 weeks after completing the paperwork at the DMV,

1. Call CHP Inspection Appointment center for an appointment (Golden Gate Division, 510-622 4611 for Bay Area)
2. Receive Vehicle Verification document (make sure VIN number on both frame and engine are visible)
3. Go to your local DMV office or call for an appointment
4. Complete an Application for Title or Registration (REG 343)
5. Provide out-of-state title and Vehicle Verification Certificate
6. Ask for Non-Operational and Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) since you are not operating the bike on public roads
7. Pay the fees (about $213 for a Ducati 748) by check or cash
8. Title will be mailed to you in about two weeks.

From the AFM email list - I took out names because I didn't think the'd want their name attached to something that was copied.

AFTER you have the title, or if you don't want one in the first
place, you can use a little-known section to keep the bike legal without having to pay non-op fees every year.

California law says you must have a bike registered in order to
transport it on public roads. Yep, that means hauling it in a trailer or truck. I've never heard of it being enforced, but who knows what may happen now when the DMV is so poor. Many racers cover this (without realizing it) by going non-op, but that means paying fees every year. Unless you want the DMV to have your money, here's the way to do it for $3 one time.

The required form is "Motorcycle Transportation Permit", Form #712.
If my experience is any indication, the DMV employee will have no idea what this form is, and may not even be able to find a copy on site. I found it very helpful to show them the Vehicle Code sections below, and to tell them the Form number. By the way, the procedure number is 30.350 in the DMV manual. The problem for the clerk may be figuring out how to key it in. Apparently it's in the miscellaneous section.

Further, Sacramento may reject the application after it is submitted by the local DMV office. In my case, Sacramento seemed to think I was applying for an "off-road" (dirt bike) permit, and sent me letters warning me that my registration was past due and severe penalties could result. It took several months of repeated letters to finally get the proper permit. I could still transport the motorcycle during that time, as I'd received proof of payment while at the DMV office.

The relevant Vehicle Code passages are repeated below. These were copied verbatim from the California Vehicle Code on the DMV Web site. You can find a listing of the sections (Articles) here: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/vc/vctoc.htm

38232. A special fee of three dollars ($3) shall be paid to the
department for the issuance of a special transportation
identification device issued pursuant to Section 38088 and shall be deposited in the Motor Vehicle Account in the Transportation Tax Fund. Such fee is in lieu of the fees provided in Section 38225.
[Note: 38225 is the Off-Highway fee section, and this is an important statement because off-highway vehicles still require annual registrations.]

38088. (a) Upon payment of the fee specified in Section 38232, the department shall issue to the owner of a motorcycle, which the owner has certified as being used exclusively in racing events on a closed course, a special transportation identification device for the purpose of identifying the motorcycle while it is being transported upon a highway to and from racing events on a closed course. Such device may be either a plate or a sticker, whichever is determined by the department to be the most appropriate.
(b) Such device is nonrenewable, nontransferrable, and
becomes invalid when the vehicle for which it was issued is sold or dismantled.
(c) A certificate of ownership may not be issued in
conjunction with a special transportation identification device.

38022. Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 4000, motorcycles issued a special transportation identification device pursuant to Section 38088 may be transported upon a highway to and from a closed course.
[Note: Section 4000 essentially says that any motor vehicle on a
public road has to be registered.]

We've scheduled our next AFM New Racer School for 8/31 at Thunderhill.
Successful completion will entitle you to race on 9/5 there. If you're interested in racing, but not quite ready, 8/31 might be a good plan (while you work on skills during practice events or riding schools).

On 8/31 NRS students will have their own riding group, and will
alternate track time with A and B groups. So there will be plenty of track time with our numerous, talented instructors (including a special practice session on "race starts"). When not on the track NRS students will be in the air-conditioned classroom receiving lessons.

You can sign up on the website using the secure shopping cart.

If you want to race with the AFM but don't want to wait until 8/31 then sign up with our friends at Pacific Track Time
(http://pacifictracktime.com) or Zoom Zoom Track Days (http://zoomzoomtrackdays.com). These capable organizers and long-time club racers are offering NRS schools on 4/26, 6/7 (PTT) and 5/23/04 (ZZ). The AFM also has a school planned for 6/12 at Thunderhill (it is not 100% certain it will be run; I am trying to find out).

Though not for everyone, club racing is thrilling and a great way to spend quality time with neurotic, compulsive riders just like ourselves.
It doesn't cost a fortune to get started, and you'll never know what you're missing until you give it a whirl.

See you at the track!
Lance.

P.S. The "news" link on our website has a little more information about the 8/31 NRS and advanced steps you should take to ensure your racing on 9/5.

From the AFM email list and Robert Kennedy.
We've discussed this millions of times here on the list. Maybe it's time for this to be a FAQ?

Here's my understanding of the deal:

Your individual printed time sheet that you pick up after the practice session is always accurate if your transmitter got picked up on every lap. Your lap times on that sheet are basically gospel if your transmitter was working and you weren't pushing your bike back and forth near the timing system antenna.

After the race, if someone's transmitter wasn't picked up, additional start/finish crossings recorded by the visual scorers are manually added to the electronically recorded data by the timing and scoring team. Although the resulting list of start/finish crossings is known to be in the correct order to reflect the real race results, nothing is known about the exact timing of the added crossings.

The timing and scoring software does not HAVE to be designed this way, but it happens that it IS designed so that it makes up an exact time when each of the added crossings is assumed to have taken place. Therefore, anyone who had a crossing manually entered into the electronic data will get some lap times in the final results that are based on the crossing time(s) made up by the software. These lap times are not real, but nevertheless they are subject to appearing in the "best lap" column of the final race results summary.

I don't believe (although I could be wrong) that the electronically recorded crossing times for anyone whose transmitter was picked up correctly are altered during the software's process of generating assumed crossing times. Therefore I believe the best lap shown in the final race results summary for anyone whose transmitter was correctly
picked up should be the same as that person's best lap on their
individual printed time sheet for that race.

The individual printed time sheets are printed BEFORE any the
electronic results are checked against visual scoring data, so the lap times reflected on your individual time sheet are always real, provided that your transmitter was picked up correctly. If your transmitter was picked up intermittently, the times shown on your individual printed time sheet are liable to be aggregates of multiple laps because some start/finish crossings are missing and will get filled in with made-up crossing times as described above.

Tee-hee, I just got back from the DMV office and am now the proud owner of a California Motorcycle Transportation Permit.

As promised, they had no idea what I was talking about but I showed 'em a copy of Kevin's email and they retreated into the office. After about 20 minutes of flurry they came back with a copy of Form #712.

The manager said that she'd been working there for 15 years and that this was the first time she'd ever heard of one of these. Amusingly, the form's print date is listed as October 1975!

Anyway, you just list the VIN, Make, Name, Mailing Address and sign, under penalty or perjury, the "this motorcycle is used exclusively for racing events on a closed course." Then you pay your $3 and they give you a sticker to put on your bike (which looks about as old as the form) and tell you to keep Form #712 with you when you're towing the bike.
